RE: Transfer switch
Are you sure you don't already have one?
I am sure. Trailer didn't come with inverter.

Transfer switch
Thinking to get one, to switch automatically to inverter in blackouts. Need only 30 A. This one by Southwire looks like an idea (they changed the name to TRC) TRC 41300 but why does it have to be that huge 8x10x14 inches? Is there anything smaller?

RE: Free VPN?
We have the free version of Tunnel Bear which gives you 2GB per month. Not enough for watching videos but plenty to handle the stray site that gets cranky if you are out of the country.
Thanks for reminding about the free Bear. It never failed me but was only 0.5GB. Have checked it just now - it says I have 3GB.

RE: Free VPN?
Aw, snap - VPN at uwsp.edu needs MFA to connect. Probably "their" university password. My laptop doesn't even have MFA other than a password :)

RE: Free VPN?
Thanks, people.
Mullvad is inexpensive indeed.
Found Windscribe free, 2gb data cap - presumably per month. Email is not required but with email it's 10gb. I only need it occasionally. $70/year. Mullvad is $55/year.
Built-in Windows VPN is a mystery to me. It probably works but I don't see server locations, need it to be US with Canada as an option.

Free VPN?
Have Proton VPN. No data limit, 3 countries to choose: US, Japan and Netherlands, I only need US. Wasn't using laptop for a while, now Proton demands to log in or create account, one country - Netherlands, all other are for pay. Probably a sneaky upgrade. Tried to download free version a few times with same result.
Free Proton on my desktop works as usual, 3 countries. Is there any official link to "good" free Proton? Or any similar free soft - with the US to choose and no data limit? Before I used Hotspot Shield, don't remember what was wrong, data limit or trial period.

RE: Small speakers on the wall?
I added a small self powered sub and a small amp to power speakers similar to what you're looking at. The sub and amp went under the couch. The system really rocks and isn't hard on the RV electrical. The sound always surprises people.
Movies and music are a positive experience again.
Under the couch is a good idea. Any suggestions for a sub? Powered sub with built-in amp seems easier, but maybe I'm missing something.

Small speakers on the wall?
24 ft trailer, 6'6" ceiling, not much room. Built-in ceiling speakers are "ok" for watching movies, not so much for music.
I'm thinking to hang these on the wall close to the ceiling as standalone 2.0 with no subwoofer: Polk Signature S10E, $100.
They used to be $250, now Polk upgraded it to Elite ES10 for the same $250 - something with improved X-over, I don't think it matters in my situation. Amazon is dumping older S10E for $100. Compact, 8x5x6". Front bass port, but in this small space I'll be within 5-10 ft from them and won't be running it loud.
Any thoughts? Or maybe just to upgrade existing ceiling speakers with better ones.

RE: Solar Power forTrailer
is that a typo on the 1-1.5W/100AH, you meant 1-1.5W/1AH maybe?
anyways I don't think it is becoming less important, but rather going above that might be less important.
Yes, a typo, meant 1-1.5W per 1AH.
Having an oversize solar is good when you want it to be your only or main source of power. In rain/clouds 700W solar would work like a 70W, with daily harvest barely covering propane fridge thermostat, detectors, lights, pump, small electronics. You can still make it, battery won't go down. With 400W becoming 40W you're drawing from the battery and who knows how long the dark spell will last. My needs don't increase beyond necessary when I'm not on hook-ups. Maybe for others self-control is more difficult.

RE: Solar Power forTrailer
Cover the entire roof with panels. You probably won't be able to fit more than 600-800W - need to leave some space to walk around, it's easier to install when you can also walk between them. Leave 12-18" distance from air conditioner box or it would shade the panels. You'll figure out once you've climbed the roof and dragged the panels up :). Might want to cut cardboard templates (I didn't). Panels must have ~4 degree slope to shed rain water and dust, on the arched roof you'll naturally get a slope if you just attach panels parallel to the roof.
24V nominal panels are cheaper per watt than 12V nominal. Bad news is that you will need MPPT type controller for them, more expensive than PWM type. Good news is that cable will be thinner than with 12V array. Buy used panels if you can, but they are inexpensive new either.
I tried Renogy MPPT, quite an annoying device despite built-in display. Bought Victron - more money, better charging algorithm, no display - though both can be controlled via phone app. I think Victron has an optional remote display. Buy controller after you've bought the panels.
Many are getting Li batteries these days, the rule 1-1.5W solar per 100 AH of batteries becomes less important then.

RE: Voltage protector 110V?
A curve-ball question: 1000-1200W PSW inverter with auto transfer switch that transfers when AC drops to adjustable 90-105V, not when AC disappears. Long recovery delay would've been nice, I'd rather keep it on inverter longer than switch on-off repeatedly. Is there such a thing, or at least a 30A switch with these features?

RE: Voltage protector 110V?
Don, you probably have 30A 110V breaker already, $14 gizmo takes 40A, should work for you - if it will work.
AllegroD: 90V is the low voltage cut-off, it can be adjusted. You don't want to run AC devices at 90 or lower. Looking to protect the whole rig.

RE: Better/brighter interior bulbs?
Wow. 1000 lumens per 1.5" board is really bright. 2000 lumens per fixture could be more than I need, but at $1 per board might as well try it. Thanks joedeb720.

Voltage protector 110V?
Not an auto-transformer, just an auto-disconnect when it drops below 90 or rises above 140. Limits are adjustable to >90 or <140 accordingly, i.e. to a narrow-er range if needed. Recovery voltage is also adjusted. Brown-outs can do a number on 110V devices when grid power resumes at 80-90 and stays like this for some time.
There is a plug-in single-receptacle protector on Amazon: $24, 15A, 2200W. 15A @110V is not 2200W, but close.
Or a whole-trailer protector on Aliexpress, I like this idea better: $14 with shipping, 40A. The usual doubt with this source - will it work as it should. Don't see it on Amazon.
Any suggestions?

RE: Better/brighter interior bulbs?
C Schomer, I hear you about head basher hood.
For under cabinet (not under counter) I found 20" bar 20"x1.5" 8W, "should be" ~1,000 lumens, now need to choose btw this or this 20"x6.5" 1400 lumens. The latter is much pricier but also much wider, good to illuminate the counter from low height.
Edit: corrected typo - it's 8W LED bar, not 8A of course.

RE: Heated mat?
I like the idea of the mat, but it would be better if you could put a rheostat on it to control the power going to it. that way you could adjust it to say 85 degrees which would be perfect for a floor temp.
Looks like heated mat is a no-go. 5 ft long snow-melting mats are too powerful and those with less power are 3 ft long or shorter. Many complaints on horrible smell of indoor heated mats. Snow-melting 5ft mat looks like made from the same rubber-ish material, should smell too.
Under-carpet heated mats in hardware stores are not made to be walked on, they are to be laid under carpet or tiles. Too bad, I like the idea of heat coming up from the floor, lived once in apartment with heated floor, loved it.
